CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Benton Fraser
• Character Age: 32
• Character Canon: Due South
• Canon Point: December 1994, post-Gift of the Wheelman (1.10)

• Character History: LINK.

• Character Personality:

+ Bookish: Fraser is an information sponge who spent his formative years with the Inuit, the Mounties, and a pair of traveling librarians. He has an incredibly accurate memory for things he studied even as a child, a wide range of esoteric skills, and remains exceedingly curious. After growing up in the Northwest Territories and spending most of his professional life working in the Yukon, he's exceptionally skilled at survival in those climates. He's depicted as someone who can turn his hand to almost anything, and it can easily be assumed he knows a great deal about skills and topics not necessarily covered in canon, simply due to the breadth of his canonical knowledge. Fraser has been shown to learn all sort of skills simply by reading; in canon, we see him reading music scores so well that he can hear symphonies in his head.

+ Observant: Fraser ascribes to the deductive reasoning school of investigation, and is exceptionally observant about not only his fellow men, but also weather patterns, geographic locations, and animal migration patterns, to name only a few.

+ Empathetic: Despite having a niche experience growing up, Fraser can easily put himself into another's shoes and imagine how they must be feeling or why they chose to act the way they did. This trait often comes in handy during investigations, and is similarly useful when he's trying to help his friends (or a stranger he just met but instantly decides to assist).

+ Polite: Fraser's powers of observation are mitigated and softened by his equally intense dedication to being courteous and polite. Even if he observes something about someone that would make clear to him some embarrassing secret or other, he would never bring it up (unless the other personal was a criminal he was attempting to apprehend, and even then only sometimes).

+ Lawful Good: Fraser will always, always Do The Right Thing, even if that Right Thing is much more complicated, difficult, or downright impossible to accomplish, no matter what injury or inconvenience to his person it might cause.

+ Adaptive: Despite his strong adherence to tradition and his own preferences, Fraser is surprisingly adaptive. Prior to coming to Chicago, his previous 'big city' experience had been in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (pop. 1,233 in 1990), and he'd been reassigned almost immediately due to his inability to adapt to such an 'urban' environment. But he manages to adapt reasonably well to Chicago, though a good deal of that can be ascribed to his partner, Ray Vecchio, who helps Fraser settle in, and his work with the Canadian Consulate.

— Naive: As a 32 year old man who has spent most of his life alone in the frozen north, Fraser lacks worldliness often taken for granted. It takes him longer than might be expected to understand when someone is flirting with him, he seems to have little to no experience in flirting, himself, and he has only had one romantic relationship of note (unconsummated as of his canon point). He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, and he generally believes everyone is as driven to do the right thing as he is. In canon, the mere power of his expectation and the weight of his disappointment make some characters choose to act more generously than they otherwise would, but he is still confronted regularly with a world that doesn't align to his own experiences and standards.

— Pedantic: Goes hand-in-hand with the bookishness. He has a tendency to correct people on tiny, unimportant details, often at inopportune moments (like when people are shooting at him and Ray). It's always polite, but that just as often makes it even more annoying for the people he's correcting.

— Stubborn: He may seem easy-going, but Fraser can dig his heels in as hard as any mule; he's just more polite about it. Once he's decided on a course of action, he is the stone from which none can wring blood or move. In some ways, it would be less obnoxious if he were to get heated about it the way others do so he could be argued with, but his stubbornness is a quiet kind which never fails to send Ray Vecchio spiralling before he inevitably acquiesces.

Lawful Good: Between his naivety, his stubbornness, and being a pedant, Fraser's tendency toward Lawful Good can land him in some very hot water, usually because he's determined to do A Right Thing that winds up putting his partner in a dangerous situation or results in Fraser either reprimanding himself or getting in trouble for going against orders. This is, in fact, how the whole show kicks off: after the events of the pilot, wherein he foiled a plot which made multiple people in the upper echelon of the Canadian government and in the Mounties look bad, he was redistributed to Chicago as a punishment.

• Important Notes:

Fraser occasionally gets visits from the ghost of his deceased father, Robert Fraser. At the canon point from which he comes (1.10), he suspects this is due to a combination of reading Robert's journals and his own imagination. Later in canon, it's suggested Robert's ghost is actually appearing, but for the purposes of Fraser's time in Sing, I lean towards the original interpretation. It would be great if occasionally he could 'see' his father in his head, even if only during Auroras.
